Informal interaction for remote teams

Working with a remote team can have challenges. One thing worth noting is the lack of informal interactions that take place. Although too much “water cooler” chat can definitely be counter-productive, not having any at all is definitely not healthy for any organization.

At Todo we have experimented with a few things (daily huddles, a random channel on slack, etc). One thing that we have come to terms with is that while working with a completely remote team is that informal interactions will definitely have to be facilitated in one way or another. Which might make them slightly artificial but hopefully won’t make them without purpose.

It’s interesting when you completely remove something from your daily life (in this case, informal interaction with colleagues) it’s only then you realize how important it really is.
