Specialists

I’ve been fighting with the idea that specializing is the way forward. In other words you need to be really good at one thing to be able to progress in your career.

Like many things this is probably true, but only up to a point.

Specialists miss things. They can be so focussed on their specific objective that they might miss the point completely.

For example a great web developer might build your business a beautiful website. But will it drive sales? Maybe less beautiful but more optimized to selling is better?

The only way to truly mitigate this is to have a great generalist overseeing projects. A strategic thinker that sees things the specialists don’t.
